When I first started photographing Hummers, I would lose my mind trying to follow the little guys around a bush or plant with my lens and walk away with perhaps one or two good shots. I addition, I would wind up with a shot of the back of the bird and the bush competing with the subject, just too messy.
What I’ve done over the years is to simply be patient. Instead of trying to follow the bird around, I simply pick out a bloom with a nice clean clutter free background, focus on that bloom and hope to hell the bird sips from it. When it does, I get the shot. Check out the video to see what I mean.
